# Dryer repair cost, band by band.

Bands rather than prices, because the same repair costs differently on a freestanding unit and on a built-in. What does not change is the order — the cheap causes are also the common ones — or the rule that decides repair against replace.

## No figure is given until a technician has seen the dryer run.

Everything on this page is a band rather than a quote. A dryer that will not heat can need a blown fuse and a vent cleaning, or a new heating element, or gas valve coils, and there is no way to tell which over the phone. A number offered before anyone has measured the heat and the airflow is either a guess or the price of the worst case. You hear the real price of the real repair before work starts, and the choice stays with you.

The bands, job by job

### Ask what the diagnostic visit costs, and whether it is taken off the repair, while you are booking rather than when the bill arrives.

### Expect a price for the specific repair as soon as the cause is found, and before you agree to any work.

### Expect to hear it straight when a dryer is not worth repairing.

That verdict is part of what the visit is for.

## What a repair usually costs.

A workable test: compare the repair with the cost of a new dryer that fits the same space and hookup. A basic full-size vented dryer is simple to replace, so a motor on a worn-out machine may not be worth it. A stacked pair sized to its closet, a gas unit, or a heat-pump dryer is harder and costlier to match, and that keeps most repairs on them worth doing.

| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Vent cleaning and inspection](https://dryerrepair.center/services/dryer-vent-cleaning-and-inspection/) | lowest | Not a repair at all, and the visit that stops the largest share of the heat failures below it. |
| [Door switch, catch or hinge](https://dryerrepair.center/services/door-switch-and-latch-repair/) | lowest | A dryer that ignores the start button with the door shut often ends at this small switch. |
| [Thermal fuse or thermostat](https://dryerrepair.center/services/thermal-fuse-and-thermostat-repair/) | low | Inexpensive parts, priced together with clearing the restriction that made them trip. |
| [Heating element](https://dryerrepair.center/services/heating-element-repair/) | low | The usual answer when an electric dryer tumbles with cold air and both breaker legs are on. |
| [Igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils](https://dryerrepair.center/services/gas-burner-and-igniter-repair/) | low | Most no-heat calls on a gas dryer end at one of these three, once the gas supply is confirmed. |
| [Drum belt, idler pulley, rollers or glides](https://dryerrepair.center/services/drum-belt-and-roller-repair/) | low | Squeals, thumps and a still drum. Worn rollers are normally done as a pair while the drum is out. |
| [Control board, timer or moisture sensor](https://dryerrepair.center/services/controls-and-sensors/) | moderate | Priced against the model, and tested against its inputs first, since dirty sensor bars imitate a failed board. |
| [Condensate pump, condenser or heat-pump system](https://dryerrepair.center/services/ventless-condenser-and-pump-repair/) | moderate | Pumps and seals sit low on the scale; a heat-pump compressor is the one ventless job that reaches the top. |
| [Drive motor or blower wheel](https://dryerrepair.center/services/motor-and-blower-repair/) | highest | The largest part in most vented dryers, and the repair where the dryer's age and drum condition decide the answer. |

## What the diagnostic visit covers.

The first visit decides what the repair actually is. The fee, and whether it is credited against the repair, is said when you book, before anyone comes out.

[The diagnostic visit](https://dryerrepair.center/services/diagnostic-visit/)

01

### Running the dryer and measuring what it does: the exhaust temperature, the airflow at the outside hood and the length of a timed cycle.

02

### Checking the simple causes first: the breaker or gas shut-off, the lint screen and its housing, the duct, the hood flap and the door.

03

### Testing the suspect parts, such as the heater or burner, the thermal fuse and thermostats, the belt, the motor and the sensors, rather than replacing on a hunch.

04

### A clear account of what failed, what the repair involves and what it costs, or an honest word that this dryer is not worth the repair.

## What moves the price.

Five things decide where in its band a repair lands. None of them is known for certain until a technician has seen the dryer.

[The types](https://dryerrepair.center/types/)

### Where the dryer stands and how it is reached

A dryer standing on the floor with room behind it is the simplest case. A stacked pair in a closet may have to be pulled out and the dryer lifted down, and a ventless unit adds filters, a condenser and a pump. Access and moving the machine often make more difference to the bill than the part itself.

### The part, and whether the van carries it

Fuses, thermostats, door switches, belts and igniters sit at the low end and are commonly carried. A control board, a drive motor or a heat-pump part moves the job up. A part fitted on the first visit costs less than one ordered for a return trip.

### The vent behind the failure

Many heat failures are caused by a restricted vent. Replacing a fuse or an element without clearing the duct brings the dryer back to the same failure, so vent work is often priced in alongside the part that tripped.

### The make, and how easily its parts arrive

Parts for widely sold makes are easy to get and reasonably priced. Premium and imported makes, and heat-pump models in particular, can carry costlier parts and longer waits, and a discontinued part can settle the repair-or-replace question by itself.

### One visit or two

A dryer fixed on the diagnostic visit costs less than one that needs a second trip. Giving the model number from the door frame or the back panel when you book raises the odds of a single visit.

## Not every dryer breaks the same way.

A gas dryer has a burner and a flame sensor, a stacked pair shares a frame with its washer, and a ventless one condenses its moisture instead of blowing it outdoors. Find the one you own.

### Electric dryer

The most common dryer in US homes: a 240-volt heating coil, a belt-driven drum and a vent to the outside.

### Gas dryer

Heat from a burner on natural gas or propane, lit by an igniter and watched over by a flame sensor, with the motor on 120 volts.

### Stackable dryer

The dryer half of a stacked pair or a single-frame laundry center, where the height and the closet decide how the repair is done.

### Ventless dryer

Heat-pump and condenser dryers, including 24-inch compacts, that take the water out of the air instead of blowing it outside.

## Questions about the price.

### How much is the diagnostic visit?

It is quoted at booking, so the amount is known before anyone arrives. You also learn then whether it counts toward the repair, instead of finding out on the invoice.

### Why bands instead of exact prices?

A band is as much as anyone can honestly say without seeing the dryer. No heat can mean a thermal fuse or a burner assembly, and gas or electric changes the part entirely. The bands show where each job sits against the rest.

### Am I committed to the repair once the diagnosis is done?

No. The specific repair is priced first and the choice is yours. Turning it down leaves nothing more to pay beyond the visit.

### Could the price rise partway through the job?

The price agreed after the diagnosis is the one that stands. If opening the cabinet turns up a second problem, such as a worn roller beside a broken belt, you are told and asked before anything is added.
