# Find your dryer's model number

The usual dryer model number location is a label inside the door opening: on the rim of the opening, the frame beside it, or the inside of the door on stacked units. Some ventless models put it behind the water tank. Copy the model and serial numbers exactly, every letter, dash and suffix.

## At a glance.

The model number is the first thing a parts counter, a manual download or a recall lookup asks for, and on a dryer it is nearly always hiding just inside the door.

### Most full-size dryers The rim of the door opening

Whirlpool and GE both place the tag where it shows with the door open.

### Stacked laundry Inside the dryer door

Whirlpool's location for its stacked units.

### Ventless Behind the water tank

Slide the tank out first on Whirlpool's ventless models.

### Two numbers Model and serial

The model says what it is; the serial says which unit and when it was built.

## Why the model number comes before everything else

Two dryers that look identical from the front can use different heating elements, drum belts or control boards, and the only thing separating them is a few characters on a sticker. The serial number adds when and where that particular unit was built, which is what production changes and safety notices are tied to.

That is why the dryer model number location is worth learning once. It takes a minute, and the number can then live in a note on your phone for every call, parts order and manual search after that. Parts sites often list several versions under one model, and the suffix or the serial picks the right one.

With the full model number in hand, four things open up:

- The owner's manual and the installation instructions
- The parts list and exploded diagrams
- Recall and safety notices for that production run
- The right error code chart for that control

## Where the label sits on each kind of dryer

Start with the door open and a flashlight. On every type, the label is a white or silver sticker with a barcode, and on a dryer that has been in service for years it may be partly hidden under lint.

### Standard full-size dryers

Look around the rim of the drum opening. Whirlpool puts the tag on the rim of the door opening of its front-load dryers, and GE describes the inside front face of the dryer compartment, on the left or right side, with the door open. If the rim is bare, run the light along the inner edge of the door and the frame around the latch before looking anywhere else.

### Stacked pairs and laundry centers

Whirlpool places the dryer tag on its stacked laundry on the inside of the dryer door, so open the upper door and check its inner face and edge. A single-unit laundry center, with washer and dryer built into one cabinet, usually carries one model number for the whole unit, while a stacked pair of separate machines has two.

### Ventless and compact dryers

On a Whirlpool ventless dryer the tag is behind the water tank, so the tank has to slide out before the label shows. Other compact and European-style dryers vary, and the opening pages of the manual usually include a drawing that marks the spot.

## Reading the label correctly

Look for the words Model or MOD and Serial or SER. The model is usually the longer string of letters and numbers; the serial sits on the same label. Copy both character by character, because the letter O and the zero, and the letter I and the one, are easy to swap, and many parts lookups will not guess for you.

Many labels end the model with a suffix after a dash, a slash or a space. It looks optional and is not: it can be the only mark that separates two versions of the same dryer built with different parts.

The same rating label usually lists the electrical rating of an electric model, or the gas type of a gas model. Those lines matter when a dryer moves to a new home or has to be converted between natural gas and propane, a job for a qualified installer rather than an owner, and they are worth photographing along with the numbers.

- Photograph the label with the flash on, then zoom in to read it.
- Lift lint off with a dry cloth; solvents can smear the print.
- Note whether the label says gas or electric, and the voltage printed on it.

## When the label is missing or unreadable

Labels fade with heat, peel after years of lint and cleaning, or come off during an earlier repair. Look for the owner's manual or installation papers if they were kept, the purchase receipt or delivery paperwork, and any registration email from the time the dryer was bought.

A technician can often identify a dryer from its parts, but that takes time out of the visit. Clear photos of the whole front, the control panel and the inside of the door help narrow it down before anyone arrives.

## What to send when you book

Send the model and serial numbers, whether the dryer runs on gas or electricity, and the photo of the label. Add how it is installed, such as a stacked pair in a hall closet or a freestanding dryer in a basement, because that tells the technician how the cabinet will be reached and whether it has to come out of an enclosure.

If the display showed a code, add a photo of it on the screen, and say whether the dryer came with the house. An inherited dryer often has no paperwork at all, and the label is then the only record of exactly what it is.

## Where to stop

Finding the label never calls for tools. Do not pull a gas dryer away from its connector or tip a stacked unit to look at the back; if the only place left to search is behind the cabinet, leave it for the visit and send photos of the front and the door opening instead.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Open the door with a light

Check the rim of the opening, the frame beside it and the inner edge of the door.

02

### Try the type-specific spot

Stacked: the inside of the dryer door. Ventless: behind the water tank.

03

### Photograph the label

Flash on, straight on, close enough to read every character.

04

### Copy both numbers

Model and serial, suffix included, with O and 0 checked against the photo.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Could the label be on the rear panel instead?

Some makers add a second plate at the back, but the main label is almost always visible with the door open, so that is where to look first.

### My washer and dryer were bought as a pair. Do they share a number?

Separate machines have separate model numbers, even when they are sold together and stacked. A single-unit laundry center is the exception and usually has one.

### Can the serial number tell me how old the dryer is?

It usually encodes the build date, but every manufacturer uses its own pattern. The maker's support website can decode it from the full serial.

### What if the receipt and the label disagree?

Trust the label on the dryer. Store listings sometimes shorten the model, drop the suffix or add a color code, while the label shows exactly what the factory built.
