# Repair or replace a dryer: what decides it

Whether to repair or replace a dryer depends on which part failed and what kind of dryer it is. Thermal fuses, belts, rollers, door switches, igniters and heating elements are worth fixing on almost any machine. A holed or rusted drum, a failed heat-pump compressor, or an old laundry center with both halves wearing out usually points to replacement.

## At a glance.

A clothes dryer is mechanically simple, and that simplicity is why most of them deserve another repair. The exceptions are real, though: a heat-pump dryer with a sealed-system failure, a rusted drum, and a laundry center whose washer half is also on its way out.

### Worth fixing at almost any age Thermal fuse, belt, rollers, igniter, heating element

These are the parts a dryer is designed to shed, and each one comes out without disturbing the cabinet.

### Usually the end A drum with rust through it or a split seam

The drum is the body the whole load rides in, and a new one is rarely a sensible purchase.

### Changes the math Heat-pump dryers

They contain a refrigerant circuit, so one failure is far costlier than anything on a vented dryer.

### Check first The vent run

A crushed or packed duct can make a healthy dryer look finished, and it will ruin a new one too.

## Where dryer failures land on the cost scale

Owners often judge a dryer by how dramatic the symptom felt. A drum that stopped dead with a bang sounds fatal, yet it is usually a belt. Cold air for a week sounds minor, yet on a heat-pump model it can mean the refrigerant circuit. Sorting the failure into a band first keeps the decision honest. From least to most expensive:

1. The cheapest kind of repair: a lint blockage in the duct or the blower housing, a blown thermal fuse, a door switch, a snapped belt.
2. The low band: drum rollers and the idler pulley, a heating element, a cycling or hi-limit thermostat, a gas igniter or flame sensor.
3. Moderate: a drive motor, a replacement control board, the coils on a gas valve, a moisture-sensing harness buried in the cabinet.
4. The top of the scale: a heat-pump compressor or refrigerant leak, a drum that has rusted or split, or several moderate parts at once on an old machine.

### The blown fuse is a messenger

A thermal fuse opens because something ran too hot. Replacing it restores the dryer for a while, and then it opens again if the duct behind the machine is still half full of lint. When a technician finds a blown fuse, the repair worth paying for includes the airflow check that explains it.

### When the control board is the question

Electronic controls are the part most likely to tip an owner toward a new machine. Before deciding, confirm the board really has failed: a door switch, a loose harness plug or a failed moisture strip connection can all make the display act strangely. If the board truly is gone, the deciding fact is whether the maker still lists a replacement for your exact model number.

## Signs a dryer is finished

Some conditions make any repair poor value regardless of the dryer's age. A good technician names them plainly instead of quoting around them.

- Rust spots on the inside of the drum that leave orange marks on light clothes, or a hole that has worn through.
- A drum seam that has opened, snagging fabric on every load.
- A rear bulkhead or front panel cracked where the drum bearings or rollers mount, so new rollers would have nothing solid to ride on.
- Scorching inside the cabinet from an old lint fire, with melted wiring insulation or warped sheet metal.
- On a heat-pump dryer out of its sealed-system coverage, a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak.

An older dryer pulled out from the wall, a technician kneeling beside it with a tool bag, seen from behind.

## How the type changes the answer

The same worn roller means different things on different machines, because the real expense of replacement is set by what the new dryer has to connect to and fit into.

*Repair or replace, by dryer type*

| Situation | Usual answer | Main reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Vented electric or gas, low-band part | Repair | The part is modest and reached by opening the cabinet |
| Vented dryer past ten years, moderate part | Either; lean replace | A new unit uses the same vent, outlet or gas connection |
| Laundry center, dryer half failing | Repair in most cases | Replacement means buying a washer too |
| Heat-pump dryer, sealed-system failure | Usually replace | Refrigerant work is the costliest dryer repair |
| Any type with a rusted or split drum | Replace | The drum is the machine's body |

### Vented electric and gas dryers

A standard 27-inch vented dryer is the easiest case either way. Parts are plentiful, the cabinet opens with a few screws, and a replacement drops into the same spot on the same outlet or gas connection. With these, age deserves real weight: a machine well past ten years that needs a moderate-band part is a fair candidate for replacement, while a low-band part is almost always worth doing.

### Laundry centers and stacked pairs

A one-piece laundry center shares a frame and often a control panel between the washer below and the dryer above, so replacing it means replacing both. That argues for repairing the dryer half unless the washer half is also near the end. A separate stacked pair is freer: the dryer can be swapped alone, provided the new one accepts a stacking kit for the existing washer.

### Heat-pump and condenser ventless dryers

Filters, pumps, sensors and belts on a ventless dryer sit in the ordinary bands. The sealed refrigerant circuit on a heat-pump model does not, and its repair is the most expensive job a dryer can need. If the house has no outside vent, replacement still means another ventless machine, which is worth knowing before the estimate arrives.

## Energy as a tiebreaker

Running costs rarely justify scrapping a dryer that works. They become a reasonable tiebreaker once a moderate or top-band estimate is already on the table. ENERGY STAR says certified heat-pump dryers use around 70 percent less energy than conventional ones, and it rates every certified model by its Combined Energy Factor, where a higher number means more pounds of laundry dried per kilowatt-hour.

Before crediting a new machine with savings, look at the old one's airflow. A dryer venting through thirty feet of crumpled foil can need two cycles per load, and no rating on a showroom tag fixes that duct. Clearing the run sometimes turns a dryer that seemed to have slowed with age into a perfectly quick one.

## Decide in three moves

The honest way to repair or replace a dryer is to answer three questions about your own machine before anyone prices either option. Note what the dryer did in its last few loads as well: a thump that grew over weeks, a smell of hot dust, clothes damp only on the sensor cycle. Details like those often place a failure in its band before a panel comes off.

## Where to stop

Do not slide a gas dryer out from the wall to look for the problem yourself: the flexible gas connector can kink or crack at its fittings when the machine moves. Leave the dryer where it is, turn it off, and let a technician move it with the gas shut off at the valve.

## Step by step.

Three steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Read the data plate

Find the model and serial number inside the door frame or on the back. The serial usually encodes the build year, which settles the age question.

02

### Place the failure in a band

Have the failed part identified and the vent checked before anyone talks about a new dryer.

03

### Price the whole replacement

Count delivery, haul-away, a new duct or gas connector, a stacking kit, and for a laundry center the washer that goes with it.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Is an eight-year-old dryer worth repairing?

Usually yes. At that age the common failures are belts, rollers, fuses and heating parts, all in the lower bands, and the drum and motor typically have years left.

### Can a new dryer fix clothes that take forever to dry?

Not if the cause is the vent. A new dryer connected to the same blocked or overlong duct will dry just as slowly and run hotter, so the duct gets checked first.

### Should I replace the washer at the same time?

Only if it is also failing or you have a one-piece laundry center. Separate machines age independently, and a matched pair offers looks and stacking fit, not better drying.

### Does switching from gas to electric change the decision?

It adds work. An electric dryer needs a 240-volt circuit, and the gas line has to be capped by a qualified installer, so a like-for-like replacement is simpler.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Diagnostic visit

One visit that turns damp clothes, a silent drum or a hot smell into a named part and a price.

### Drum belt and roller repair

A drum that will not turn, or turns with a squeal, thump or scrape, repaired at the belt, the idler pulley, the rollers and the glides.

### Controls and sensors

A blank display, a panel that ignores buttons, codes, or cycles that end too soon or never end, traced to the board, timer or sensors.
