# Why a dryer stops mid-cycle, and when that is normal

A dryer shuts off mid-cycle for three broad reasons: a sensor cycle judged the load dry too soon, a thermal protector opened because the dryer or its motor got too hot, or the door or power circuit dropped out. How long it ran, and whether it restarts only after cooling, points to which.

## At a glance.

A dryer that goes quiet with the clothes still damp is either doing what its sensors told it to, or protecting itself from heat. How long it ran, whether it restarts and how the cabinet feels tell the two apart.

### Often normal Sensor cycles end themselves

Automatic cycles switch off once the humidity sensing says the chosen dryness is reached.

### Empty drum Off after about 2 minutes

GE says a sensor cycle started with no load present shuts itself off.

### Heat-related stops Restart only after cooling

A thermal protector closes again once the part it guards has cooled.

### Easy to miss Front-to-back leveling

A cabinet tilted to the rear lets the load slide away from the sensor bars.

## First decide whether the stop was normal

Whirlpool describes automatic cycles such as Normal, Heavy Duty and Colors as sensing the humidity in the drum and turning off once the chosen dryness is reached, while its quick-dry cycles are timed and meant for small loads. A full load on a quick cycle, or a sensor cycle set to a lighter dryness level, finishes with damp clothes and no failure at all.

Older dryers with a mechanical dial add another trap. In the automatic section the timer moves only in bursts, and GE notes that it advances sporadically, so it can look stuck and then jump to the end. A dial that sits still for a while and then races ahead is working as designed.

### Small and single-item loads

A sensor needs wet clothes brushing across its bars to read anything. GE says a sensor cycle with no load present shuts off after about two minutes. One damp shirt or a pair of sneakers barely touches the bars, so the dryer ends early for the same reason; a timed cycle suits these loads better.

### A tilted cabinet and coated sensor bars

The moisture bars are usually two short metal strips just inside the drum opening, low on the front bulkhead. GE points out that a dryer tilted toward the rear lets the load slide back, away from those bars, and the fix is leveling it front to back. Bars filmed over with softener read a wet load as dry, and wiping them clean is routine upkeep; the manual says what to use.

## Stops caused by heat

The drive motor carries its own thermal protector. When the motor overheats, from a drum dragging on worn rollers, a load heavier than it was built for or a blower choked with lint, the protector opens and the motor stops. Once it cools, the protector closes and the dryer starts as if nothing had happened, until the next long load.

When a dryer shuts off mid-cycle, runs again after sitting, and quits at a similar point on the next long load, it follows this pattern. So does a cabinet top that feels hot or a laundry room noticeably warmer than usual. The screen, duct and hood come first, because a starved blower makes every part run hotter.

- It stops at roughly the same point in every long load
- It will not restart right away, then runs after sitting for a while
- The cabinet, the clothes or the air in the room feel hotter than they should

### When a smell came before the stop

If the stop came with a burning or hot-electrical smell, treat it as a fire warning rather than an inconvenience: switch the dryer off at the breaker or unplug it, and leave it off. CPSC warns that lint buildup can cause excessive heat and fires in some dryers, and a dryer shutting itself down while smelling hot is exactly that case.

The control panel of a dryer mid-cycle with the start button lit and the door just opened, clothes still inside.

## Door, power and control stops

The door switch sits in the motor circuit on nearly every dryer, so a latch that barely holds stops the drum the instant it lets go. A worn catch can release as the cabinet vibrates, and on a stacked pair a laundry basket leaned against the dryer door does the same thing. If the door opens with a light touch after a stop, start there.

A loose connection at the outlet or the cord terminal block can drop power for a moment, and on an electronic control that usually ends the cycle rather than pausing it. A display that returns to its start screen partway through a load points toward power, and a plug that feels warm or a cord scorched near the terminal block means stop using the dryer.

### What the display shows

Electronic dryers usually show or store a code when they stop for any reason other than a finished cycle. Copy it exactly and look it up on our error code pages for your brand; a code is only meaningful against its own maker's chart.

## Reading the pattern before you call

Run one ordinary load on a timed cycle and stay nearby. The answers to these questions separate the three kinds of stop faster than most tests at a visit:

1. How many minutes in did it stop?
2. Were the drum and the cabinet top hot?
3. Did it start again at once, or only after sitting?
4. Was there a code on the panel, or did it go back to its opening screen?
5. Was the door still latched, or did it open with a light touch?

## Where to stop

Stop if the dryer restarts only after sitting cool, if it shut down with a burning smell, or if the plug, cord or outlet shows heat or scorching. Motors, thermal protectors, door switches and the cord terminal block sit inside or behind the cabinet on live circuits, and on a gas dryer moving the cabinet disturbs the gas connector.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Switch to a timed cycle

Dry a medium load on timed high heat to take the moisture sensing out of the picture.

02

### Level the cabinet

Set a level across the lid in both directions and turn the front feet until the bubble centers.

03

### Clean the screen and bars

Empty and wash the lint screen, and wipe the metal sensor bars inside the door opening.

04

### Check the airflow outside

Outside at the hood, the exhaust on a heated cycle should be forceful and warm.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Why does the drum start turning again after the cycle ended?

Many dryers have a wrinkle-prevention option that tumbles the load now and then without heat once the cycle is over. It is a setting rather than a restart, and the manual shows how to turn it off.

### Does stopping early harm the dryer?

A sensor cycle ending early does not. A stop caused by heat is different: each one means a part reached its protective limit, and repeated overheating shortens the life of the motor and the heater.

### Can a washer make a stacked dryer stop?

Not through its controls on a stacked pair, which are two separate machines. Its vibration can shake a worn dryer door catch open, though, and a single-unit laundry center shares one cabinet and one power connection for both halves.

### Should I restart it straight away?

Once, on a timed cycle, to see whether it runs. If it refuses and starts only after sitting, or smells hot, leave it off; forcing restarts on a motor that keeps overheating shortens its life.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Motor and blower repair

A humming dryer that will not start, a rattle behind the drum, or weak airflow, traced to the drive motor or the blower wheel.

### Door switch and latch repair

A dryer that ignores the start button with its door shut, or a door that will not stay closed, fixed at the switch, catch or hinge.

### Controls and sensors

A blank display, a panel that ignores buttons, codes, or cycles that end too soon or never end, traced to the board, timer or sensors.

### Diagnostic visit

One visit that turns damp clothes, a silent drum or a hot smell into a named part and a price.

## More in common problems.

What a dryer means when loads stay damp, cycles run long, the drum goes silent or the cabinet gets hot.

[The whole section](https://dryerrepair.center/guides/common-problems/)

Why the load came out like that

### Why dryers stop heating, gas and electric

The drum turns but the air stays cold: a tripped leg of the breaker, a closed gas valve, a blown safety part or the heat source itself.

Why the load came out like that

### Why clothes take too long to dry, from the load to the outside vent

Slow drying is usually an airflow problem, not a broken heater: the screen, the duct, the load size and the cycle come before any part.
