# Why clothes take too long to dry, from the load to the outside vent

When clothes take too long to dry, the heat is usually working and the airflow is not. The common causes, in order, are a coated lint screen or restricted vent, an overfilled or mixed load, a washer that left the clothes too wet, and a cycle that trades speed for energy. Parts come last.

## At a glance.

A load that needs two or three runs is the most common dryer complaint and the one least often caused by a broken part. The air is usually hot enough; it just is not carrying the water out of the house.

### Usual cause Humid air that cannot leave

A vented dryer removes water by pushing moist air outdoors; anything that slows that air adds time.

### Load size Half to three-quarters of the drum

Whirlpool's guidance, so every item can tumble through the air stream.

### Vent length Under 35 equivalent feet

Whirlpool's figure for best performance, with each elbow counting as extra length.

### What CPSC calls a warning Damp clothes after a typical cycle

It may mean the lint screen or the exhaust duct is blocked.

## Drying is an airflow job before it is a heat job

When clothes take too long to dry, remember that heat only loosens water from fabric; moving air is what carries the vapor away. A vented dryer draws room air in, warms it, sends it through the tumbling load and pushes it outdoors through a 4-inch duct. If that duct is half blocked, the air in the drum turns humid, the clothes stop giving up water and the cycle drags on. CPSC lists clothes still damp at the end of a typical cycle as a possible sign that the screen or the exhaust duct is blocked.

That is why slow drying and a hot cabinet so often arrive together. The heat is being made; it has nowhere to go, and the thermostats around the heater spend the load switching it on and off instead of drying.

### A lint screen that looks clean and is not

Whirlpool asks for the lint screen to be emptied before every load. Dryer sheets add a second problem: a clear, waxy film on the mesh that you cannot see. Hold the screen under a running tap; if water beads on top instead of passing through, wash it with warm water and a soft brush, as Whirlpool advises, and let it dry fully before sliding it back.

### The duct behind the dryer and the hood outside

Crushed foil duct, a dryer pushed hard against the wall, a nest in the outlet or a flap stuck half shut all have the same effect. Start a heated cycle and walk around to the hood: the flap should swing open and the air should push firmly against your palm. Whirlpool also wants the hood at least 12 inches from the ground or anything that could block it, which matters where snow, shrubs or a deck crowd the wall.

### When the run itself is too long

Whirlpool calls for 4-inch heavy metal vent material and says its dryers perform best when the total equivalent length stays under 35 feet, where every elbow adds the resistance of several feet of straight duct. A laundry room in the middle of a house, venting through a long attic run, can be slow from its first day. No amount of screen cleaning fixes a run that is simply too long.

## What the load itself does to the time

Overfilling is the easiest cause to fix. Whirlpool suggests filling the drum about one-half to three-quarters full so items can tumble freely; a packed drum turns into a single wet mass that the air flows around rather than through. Mixed loads cause a quieter version of the same thing, where light shirts are dry in half the time and a pair of jeans stays damp in the seams.

- Dry towels and heavy cottons together, apart from light synthetics.
- Shake each item out as it goes in, so it enters the air stream loose.
- Untangle sheets first; a sheet wrapped around smaller items keeps them in a damp ball.
- Dry a comforter or sleeping bag on its own, and check the manual for the largest item the drum is rated for.

### Water the washer left behind

A dryer can only remove the water it is handed. When the washer's final spin is slow or skipped, because the load was unbalanced or a gentle setting was chosen, clothes arrive heavy and dripping and the drying time grows to match. Laundry that feels cold and waterlogged coming out of the washer points to the washer, not to the dryer.

## Cycles, sensors and energy-saving options

Automatic, or sensor, cycles end when moisture bars inside the drum report that the load has reached the chosen dryness. ENERGY STAR describes this automatic termination as a way to save energy and prevent over-drying. When the bars are coated with softener residue they misread the load, and the owner ends up restarting half-dry clothes, which feels like a slow dryer even though each cycle is short.

Energy-saving options lengthen the time deliberately. Whirlpool says its EcoBoost option adds roughly 40 minutes to a load, and other makers offer similar settings that lower the heat and run longer. A household that switched one on by accident sees exactly this complaint.

### Why ventless dryers always take longer

Heat-pump and condenser dryers take moisture out of the air with a condenser instead of sending it outdoors, and they run at lower temperatures, so a longer cycle is part of the design. ENERGY STAR notes that the condensed water is drained or collected in a tank. On these machines, a condenser filter packed with lint or a full water tank is what turns long into very long.

## When a part really is the reason

Once airflow, the load and the settings are ruled out, a few parts can still add time: a heating element that has lost part of its output, a gas valve that lights the burner only some of the time, a cycling thermostat that opens too early, or a blower wheel with broken fins that moves less air. Each one leaves the dryer running but underperforming, and each needs the cabinet opened to confirm.

The exhaust at the hood sorts these out better than guessing. Compare what you feel outside on a high-heat setting with this list:

- Strong, hot exhaust: look at the load size, the washer spin and the cycle chosen.
- Weak exhaust with a hot cabinet top: the lint path or the vent.
- Strong exhaust that is barely warm: the heat source or its thermostats.

## Where to stop

Clearing the screen, the first few feet of duct and the outdoor hood is owner work. Stop when the duct runs through a wall, ceiling or attic you cannot reach end to end, when the top of the cabinet gets too hot to rest a hand on or smells scorched, or when a gas dryer would have to be pulled away from its connector; those belong to a vent cleaning crew or a technician.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Wash the lint screen

Run water over the mesh; if it beads, scrub both sides with warm water and a soft brush and let it dry.

02

### Check the hood outdoors

On a heated cycle the flap should stand open and push warm air against your hand.

03

### Dry one correct load

Half to three-quarters full, similar fabrics, on an automatic cycle with eco options off.

04

### Time it and compare

Note the minutes, then repeat after the vent is cleared so the difference is measured, not guessed.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### How long should a normal load take?

It depends on the model, the fabric and the cycle, so no single number fits every dryer. What matters is change: a dryer that finished in one cycle last year and needs two now has lost airflow or heat since then.

### Do dryer sheets make drying slower?

They can, indirectly. The film they leave on the screen and the moisture bars reduces airflow and confuses the sensing, which is why the screen needs an occasional wash and not only a brush-off.

### Is it safe to keep running extra cycles in the meantime?

A dryer working against a blocked vent runs hotter than it should, and CPSC links lint buildup to dryer fires. Clear the vent before you keep running double cycles.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Vent cleaning and inspection

The visit that prevents most dryer fires and many of the repairs above it: the duct, the hood and the lint inside the cabinet.

### Heating element repair

No heat or weak heat on an electric dryer, traced to the coil, its terminals or the safety parts on its housing.

### Controls and sensors

A blank display, a panel that ignores buttons, codes, or cycles that end too soon or never end, traced to the board, timer or sensors.

### Ventless condenser and pump repair

Heat-pump and condenser dryers that leak, stop with a full-tank warning or take hours, repaired at the exchanger, pump and filters.

## More in common problems.

What a dryer means when loads stay damp, cycles run long, the drum goes silent or the cabinet gets hot.

[The whole section](https://dryerrepair.center/guides/common-problems/)

Why the load came out like that

### Why dryers stop heating, gas and electric

The drum turns but the air stays cold: a tripped leg of the breaker, a closed gas valve, a blown safety part or the heat source itself.

Why the load came out like that

### Why a dryer stops mid-cycle, and when that is normal

A sensor that ended the load early, a motor protecting itself from heat, or a door and power circuit that dropped out, told apart by timing.
