New two-story houses tend to put the laundry upstairs with the dryer venting through the roof, while the older houses that remain keep it in a garage or utility room. The upstairs vents are the longer ones and the likelier to clog unnoticed. ## What West University does to a dryer. West University Place was developed in 1917 by Ben Hooper, a former governor of Tennessee. The city's drainage ditch was dredged in 1928 after significant flooding. Before 1992 the city liberalized its development rules so that new houses could be built. At the 2020 census the city had 5,308 housing units, 5.0 percent of them vacant. Also known as West University Place. [All of Houston](https://dryerrepair.center/locations/houston/) ### Family houses Family houses run the dryer almost daily, with school clothes, sports gear and bedding, so belts, rollers and heating parts wear faster than the machine's age would suggest. A squeal or thump that creeps in gradually is usually one of those parts. ### Mixed housing Older homes may still have vinyl or foil ducts behind the dryer, while newer ones were fitted with rigid metal vents, and the material makes a real difference to drying time and fire risk. Replacing a crushed plastic duct is one of the most useful fixes on these streets. ### Small homes Small homes put the dryer wherever it fits: a hallway closet, a stacked pair in a kitchen corner, or a 24-inch compact model under a counter. A tight closet starves a dryer of make-up air, and a louvered door or a gap at the bottom can change how well it dries. ## A visit in West University.
