Brownstones may keep the dryer on the garden level or in a hall closet, venting through an old rear wall where that was allowed. Where the owner could not add a vent, a condenser dryer is usually the answer. ## What Brooklyn Heights does to a dryer. In a typical Brooklyn Heights brownstone the basement sits a half-flight below the street and originally held the servants' work rooms, including the kitchen. Natural gas in Brooklyn Heights comes from National Grid, which now runs the old Brooklyn Union Gas system. Brooklyn Union Gas kept its headquarters in the neighborhood, on Remsen Street from 1914 and on Montague Street from 1962. The Cadman Plaza co-op towers, begun in late 1961, replaced low-rise housing in the northern part of the neighborhood with more than 1,200 apartments. A dryer that trips its breaker or runs without heat is sometimes reporting on the house's circuit rather than on itself. ### Small homes Compact and stacked dryers are harder to service in place, and reaching the back panel may mean easing the machine partway out of a closet that was built around it. A careful visit protects the floor, the door frame and whatever sits beneath the dryer. ### Mixed housing Older homes may still have vinyl or foil ducts behind the dryer, while newer ones were fitted with rigid metal vents, and the material makes a real difference to drying time and fire risk. Replacing a crushed plastic duct is one of the most useful fixes on these streets. ## A visit in Brooklyn Heights. Four steps from the call to a working dryer in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn.
