The drum on almost every home dryer is turned by a single long belt wrapped around it and around the motor pulley, kept tight by a spring-loaded idler pulley. When the drum stops turning while the motor still runs, the belt has broken or slipped, or the drum is too hard to turn because a roller, glide or bearing has seized. If the motor itself is silent, the search moves to the motor, its start switch or the door switch. The feel of the drum by hand, loose or stiff, tells most of the story. Not urgent, but do not run heat with the drum stopped: the clothes sit against the heater outlet and can scorch. It often makes sense. The drum has to come out to reach the belt, and rollers and the idler are reached the same way. Worn rollers are one of the reasons belts wear out early. ### The drum turns but slowly and unevenly. Is that the belt? Often it is a belt that has stretched or a weak idler spring letting the belt slip. A glazed, shiny belt surface is a sign it has been slipping. ### Can an overloaded dryer break the belt? It adds strain. Very heavy loads, such as a wet comforter, load the belt, rollers and motor together. Drying large items alone and at a normal size helps. ### Is the dryer worth fixing if the drum stopped turning? Usually. A belt, idler or roller repair is among the most common and least costly dryer repairs.
