When the display works but the drum does not turn, the dryer has power and the control has refused to start or the motor could not. The control waits for a closed door, a released child lock and a start button it can read. The motor needs an intact belt switch path, a working start winding, and a drum that is free to turn. A hum with no movement usually means the motor is trying against a load it cannot move; silence usually means the control never asked it to try. The 5 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Do the lights or display come on when you open the door or press a button? 02 Do you hear a hum, a click, or nothing at all when you press start? 03 Is a lock symbol or a child lock light showing on the panel? 04 Does the drum turn freely by hand with the door open? 05 Did the dryer stop suddenly in the middle of a load the last time it ran? ## Check these before you book. Dryer not starting: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Look for a lock symbol and hold the control lock button, usually marked on the panel, for three seconds. 02 Close the door firmly and listen for the click of the switch; try pressing near the latch while starting. 03 With the dryer unplugged, turn the drum by hand; very loose means a broken belt, stuck means something is jammed. ### Also worth checking - Check that a start button press is held for a second or two; many panels ignore a quick tap. - Note whether you hear a hum; that single detail separates a motor problem from a control one. ### How soon does it need a visit? It is usually released by holding one button, marked on the panel, for a few seconds. A dryer that does not turn on shows no lights at all, so the problem is power or the main control. One that does not start has a working panel and a stopped motor path, which is usually the door switch, the belt or the motor. ### Can the belt stop the dryer from starting? On many models, yes. A switch at the idler pulley watches belt tension, and a broken belt keeps the motor from starting so the dryer does not heat an empty drum. ### It hums and then clicks off. What is happening? The motor is trying to start and its overload protection is shutting it down. The cause is often a seized pulley, a failed roller or lint wrapped around the blower, and more attempts only heat the motor. ### Does a gas dryer need power to start? Yes.
