A dryer with a dark panel is either not getting power or cannot use the power it gets. Start with the outside: the plug, the outlet, the breaker, and on an electric dryer the two halves of the 240V breaker. Inside, the power cord terminal block, the thermal fuse on designs that cut the whole dryer, and the main control board are the usual suspects. A surge or outage just before the dryer went dark is worth mentioning, because it shifts the likely answer toward the control. Dryer not turning on: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Check the dryer's breaker; switch it fully off, then on, because one half of a double breaker can trip on its own. 02 Make sure the plug is fully seated and the cord is not pinched behind the dryer. 03 On a gas dryer, plug a lamp into the same outlet to confirm the outlet has power. ### Also worth checking - Open the door and see whether the drum light comes on; a lit drum means power is reaching the dryer. - Leave the dryer unplugged for a minute and plug it back in to reset the control. ### How soon does it need a visit? Not urgent. A dark dryer is not a hazard. Why is the dryer still dead? An electric dryer uses a 240V outlet that a lamp cannot test. On a gas dryer, a working outlet moves the search inside: the cord, the thermal fuse, the door switch or the control. ### Could a power outage have damaged the dryer? It can. A surge when power returns can damage the control board. Tell the technician about the outage; it points the visit at the control first. ### Is it safe to replace the power cord myself? Only if you are comfortable with 240V wiring and the dryer's installation instructions. A wrong connection at the terminal block can overheat. If the old block is scorched, it needs replacing along with the cord. ### Does a stacked washer and dryer share one power supply? A single-unit laundry center usually has one cord for both halves, so a dead washer and a dead dryer together point at the supply.
