A dryer that still heats but takes longer every month is almost always losing airflow. Hot air has to carry moisture out of the drum and through the vent; when lint narrows the screen, the duct or the outside hood, the air slows, moisture stays in the drum, and the cycle stretches. Sensor cycles add a second path to the same symptom: the moisture sensor bars get coated with fabric softener residue and stop reading correctly. Only after airflow and the sensor are clear does a weak heater become the likely answer. Dryer takes too long to dry: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Wash the lint screen with warm soapy water and hold it under the tap; water should pass through, not pool. 02 Go outside during a cycle and feel the vent hood; weak or no airflow means the vent needs cleaning. 03 Wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum, near the lint screen, with rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth. ### Also worth checking - Run a timed dry and compare it with the sensor cycle on a similar load. - Check that loads are not oversized and that the washer finished its final spin. ### How soon does it need a visit? Not urgent, but do not ignore it. A slow dryer is often an early sign of a restricted vent, and a restricted vent is how lint fires start. Many households need it about once a year, and more often with long runs, heavy use or pets. The signs to watch are longer drying times and weak airflow at the outside hood. ### Why does the sensor cycle stop while clothes are still damp? The sensor bars may be coated, or the load may be mixed: towels and thin shirts dry at different rates and the sensor reads whatever touches it. Wiping the bars and drying similar fabrics together usually helps. ### Does a ventless dryer take longer by design? Yes. Heat-pump and condenser dryers dry at lower temperatures and a typical cycle runs longer than a vented dryer. What matters is whether it has become slower than it used to be. ### Will a new dryer fix slow drying? Not if the vent is the reason.
