A dryer does not use a water line, so water under one comes from the moisture it takes out of the clothes. A ventless condenser or heat-pump dryer collects that water in a container or pumps it to a drain; a full container, a kinked drain hose or a failed pump lets it spill. On a vented dryer, water usually means warm, damp exhaust is cooling in a long or cold duct and running back down to the dryer. Before blaming the dryer, check the washer beside it and any water supply nearby, since a leak there often reaches the dryer's floor first. Dryer leaking water: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Empty the water container and push it firmly back in until it seats. 02 Follow the drain hose on a ventless dryer and straighten any kink; check the hose end is not pushed too far into the drain. 03 Clean the condenser and any second filter as described in the dryer's manual. ### Also worth checking - Look at where the duct meets the dryer and the wall for drips on a vented dryer. - Rule out the washer: check its hoses and the floor on its side as well. ### How soon does it need a visit? Not urgent. A small amount of water from a dryer is condensed moisture, not a supply leak. Where can water come from? Most often from condensation in the duct. Warm, damp exhaust cools in a long or uninsulated run, especially in winter, and water runs back into the dryer. A rain-soaked hood without a working flap can also let water in. ### How often should the water container be emptied? After every load on most condenser and heat-pump dryers. Many will stop and show a light or code when the container is full, but a cracked container can leak before that happens. ### Can a ventless dryer be connected to a drain instead? Many can, using a drain hose to a standpipe or laundry sink. The manual shows the routing and the maximum height the pump can lift. ### Why does the heat-pump dryer need its condenser cleaned? Lint that gets past the filters coats the condenser fins, which cuts both drying and the pump's ability to handle water.
