A vented dryer pushes hot, lint-laden air through a 4-inch duct to a hood outside. Lint that escapes the screen settles in the duct, at every bend and behind the hood flap, and as it builds the dryer runs longer and hotter. Lint is the fuel in most dryer fires, and the leading factor in them is a dryer that was never cleaned. Dryer vent cleaning clears the full run, and the inspection looks at what the duct is made of, how long it is and how it is routed. At least once a year in most homes, and more often for a large household, a long vent run or a roof exit. A dryer that takes noticeably longer than it used to is telling you the vent is due. ### Is the white foil or plastic duct safe? No. Plastic and thin foil ducts sag, trap lint and can burn. A dryer should connect with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, kept as short and straight as the room allows. ### Does a clogged vent really cause fires? Yes. Lint is highly flammable, and a restricted vent makes the dryer run hotter while giving the lint nowhere to go. Cleaning the lint screen every load and the vent regularly is the single most useful fire habit in a laundry room. ### Can I clean the vent myself? A short, straight run is often manageable with a brush kit.
