# Dryer Thermal Fuse and Thermostat Repair

The safety parts that stop a dryer from overheating, replaced after the reason they tripped has been found.

## What the dryer thermal fuse and thermostat repair involves.

Every dryer carries several heat safety parts. The cycling thermostat switches the heat on and off to hold the drum temperature, the hi-limit thermostat cuts the heat if the housing gets too hot, and the dryer thermal fuse is a one-time cutout that opens for good when the temperature passes its rating. Newer electronic models add a thermistor that reports temperature to the control. A blown fuse is a symptom, not a cause: it almost always means the air could not get out, and replacing it without clearing the vent invites a fire.

## Thermal fuse and thermostat repair, step by step.

Run a full cycle and check the exhaust temperature and the thermostat cycling before closing up.

01

Test the thermal fuse, the cycling and hi-limit thermostats and any thermistor with a meter.

02

Find out why the heat ran high, starting with the lint screen housing, the duct and the outside hood.

03

Replace the failed parts with ones rated for the model, never with a bypass or a jumper wire.

04

Run a full cycle and check the exhaust temperature and the thermostat cycling before closing up.

A blown thermal fuse is one of the most frequent Tampa Bay dryer calls, and it is almost always a message about airflow; a new fuse without a cleared vent simply blows again.

## Questions about the dryer thermal fuse and thermostat repair.

### Why does my dryer keep blowing thermal fuses?

Because it keeps getting too hot. A clogged or crushed vent is the cause in most homes, followed by a cycling thermostat that no longer switches off or a heating coil touching its housing. Fixing the cause is what stops the next fuse from blowing.

### Can I bypass the thermal fuse to get the dryer working?

No. The fuse is there to stop a fire. A dryer run with a jumper across it has no last line of protection against the overheating that blew it.

### Does a blown fuse stop the heat or the whole dryer?

It depends on the design. On some dryers it only cuts the heat, and the drum keeps turning cold. On others it sits in the motor circuit and the dryer will not start at all.

### My clothes come out scorching hot. Is that a thermostat?

It can be a cycling thermostat stuck closed, or a thermistor reading low, and it can be a vent so restricted that heat builds up in the drum. Stop using the dryer on high heat until it has been checked.
