Tower living

Many towers were designed around ventless dryers, or allow nothing else in a renovation, so the machine collects its moisture in a condenser and either holds it in a tank or pumps it to a drain. Those dryers need their filters and condensers cleaned more often than a vented one needs its duct.

Small homes

Small homes put the dryer wherever it fits: a hallway closet, a stacked pair in a kitchen corner, or a 24-inch compact model under a counter. A tight closet starves a dryer of make-up air, and a louvered door or a gap at the bottom can change how well it dries.

Older housing stock

Protected exteriors and historic district rules can limit where a new dryer vent may exit, which is one reason ventless dryers turn up in older buildings. Where the old vent has to stay, it is cleaned and checked more often, not less.
