What the gas dryer igniter and burner repair
involves.

The burner on a gas dryer lights in a fixed order. The igniter glows, the flame sensor sees it reach temperature, the gas valve coils open, and the burner lights. Watching that sequence through the burner window tells the technician which part stops it: an igniter that never glows, one that glows and goes dark with no flame, or a flame that lights and then will not relight. This gas dryer igniter work also covers the thermostats and the fuse that can cut the burner off.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Gas dryers are less common in Tampa Bay than electric ones, but where a house has a gas line, an igniter that glows without lighting the flame usually points to worn valve coils rather than the igniter itself.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Few houses in Orlando's newer developments run a gas dryer, so when one turns up, typically in an older house or a custom build, the igniter, flame sensor and valve coils are tested in sequence.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Gas dryers are unusual in Miami towers, and most burner calls here come from single-family houses; any smell of gas at the machine means closing the supply valve and leaving before anyone looks further.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Gas dryers in the New York area turn up mainly in houses and some older buildings with gas service to the laundry, and burner work there includes a leak check of a connector that may be decades old.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Many Houston homes have a gas line to the laundry, and a dryer that tumbles but stays cold is often a failed igniter or weak valve coils, a repair made only after the gas is shut off at the appliance valve.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Gas dryers are common in Chicagoland houses and two-flats, and an igniter that glows without lighting, or a flame that lights and then drops out, is one of the most frequent heating repairs in the area.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

When the burner in a Los Angeles garage dryer will not light, the technician checks the igniter, flame sensor and valve coils, and also the flexible connector behind the machine, which garage storage tends to knock around.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

In San Diego houses with a gas laundry hookup, burner repairs usually come down to the igniter or valve coils, and damp coastal air in an unheated garage can add corrosion at the electrical connections.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Many older Bay Area houses still run gas dryers, and burner work there includes checking the connector and shutoff valve behind the machine, which can be older than the dryer they feed.

Questions about
the gas dryer igniter and burner repair.

The igniter glows but the burner never lights. What failed?
Most often the gas valve coils. The igniter did its job and the valve did not open. A closed shut-off valve or an empty propane tank causes the same thing, so those are checked first.
Should the igniter and coils be replaced together?
Not automatically. Each is tested, and only what failed is replaced. Coils are usually replaced as a matched set, because the one that has not failed yet is the same age as the one that has.
What should I do if I smell gas while the dryer runs?
Stop using it and leave the house without switching anything on or off, then call the gas utility from outside. A dryer that smells of gas is not diagnosed while the smell is present.
Why is the flame yellow or sooty?
A healthy burner flame is mostly blue. A yellow, lazy flame points at a blocked air shutter, lint in the burner area, or the wrong orifice for the gas type. It needs attention before the dryer is used again.
