Is yours
a gas?

A gas dryer tumbles and blows air exactly like an electric one, but its heat comes from a burner fed by the house gas line. The machine plugs into an ordinary 120-volt outlet. A glowing igniter lights the burner, a flame sensor proves the flame, and two coils on the gas valve open and close the supply. When heat goes missing, the order in which those parts do or do not act is the diagnosis, and the smell of gas is never part of a normal cycle.

How to tell

01

A flexible yellow or stainless gas connector runs from a shut-off valve on the wall to the back of the dryer.

02

The plug is an ordinary three-prong 120-volt plug, the same as a lamp or a kettle uses.

03

Behind a small access panel at the front bottom you may see a burner tube and hear it light.

04

The data plate lists the gas type, natural gas or LP, and a heat input rating.

What fails
on this design.

On a gas dryer: igniter that no longer glows, gas valve coils, flame sensor, safety thermostats and thermal fuse.

The problems it shows

Igniter that no longer glows

The igniter is a brittle bar that glows orange before the burner lights. It weakens with every start, and when it cracks the dryer tumbles without heat.

Gas valve coils

The igniter glows, goes dark and nothing lights. Very often the valve coils have stopped opening the gas supply, and the dryer heats for a while when cold and then quits.

Flame sensor

The sensor tells the valve when the igniter is hot enough and whether a flame is present. When it sticks, the igniter either never gets its turn or keeps glowing with no burner.

Safety thermostats and thermal fuse

The same heat protection an electric model has sits on the burner housing and the blower. A blocked vent trips them here too, and they are replaced after the airflow is fixed.

Getting at it,
and whether to.

The gas shut-off behind the dryer is located and tested before the machine is moved or the burner is opened.

What repairs cost

On the visit

  1. Every gas connection that is disturbed is checked for leaks with a solution before the job is closed.
  2. Most burner parts are reached through a small front panel without taking the drum out.
  3. If there is a smell of gas on arrival, the work stops until the gas utility has cleared the house.

Repair or replace

A gas dryer is usually worth repairing. Igniters, valve coils and flame sensors are common and inexpensive parts, and the burner assembly rarely wears out as a whole. What changes the answer is age plus a larger failure at once, such as a worn motor together with a rusted drum.

Questions about
gas dryers.

I smell gas near my dryer. What should I do?
Do not switch anything on or off, and do not unplug the dryer. Leave the house, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Once the house has been cleared, a technician can find which connection or part let the gas out.
Why does my gas dryer heat for a few minutes and then go cold?
That is the classic sign of weak gas valve coils. They open the valve when cold and fail once they warm up, so the burner lights at first and then will not relight. Replacing the coils as a set is the usual repair.
Can a gas dryer be converted to propane?
Many can, with a conversion kit that changes the burner orifice and adjusts the valve. It has to match the dryer model and be done completely, because the wrong orifice produces a poor flame and soot.
Is it normal to hear a click and a soft whoosh?
Yes. The valve clicks as it opens and the burner lights with a gentle whoosh, then cycles off and on as the thermostat asks for heat. A loud bang, a yellow flame or soot on the housing is not normal.
Does a gas dryer need a special vent?
It needs the same short run of rigid 4-inch metal duct as any vented dryer, but a gas unit also produces combustion gases, so the vent must never be left disconnected or blocked. A gas dryer should never be vented into the room.
