Is yours
a stackable?

A stackable dryer sits on top of its partner, either as a separate front-loading dryer bolted on with a stacking kit or as the upper half of a laundry center built in one frame. Both are common in closets, hallways, condos and apartments. The parts are the same heater or burner, belt, rollers and motor found in any full-size dryer, but the unit is high off the floor, often in a tight recess, and the vent turns hard corners inside the wall.

How to tell

01

The dryer door is at eye level, above a second appliance, rather than at knee height.

02

The two machines are joined by a stacking kit, or share one frame and one control panel.

03

It lives in a closet, hallway or bathroom niche with a louvered or bifold door.

04

The vent leaves the dryer high up and often runs through a short, tight bend.

What fails
on this design.

On a stackable dryer: airflow in a closed closet, drum rollers and glides, door switch and hinge, the shared frame on a laundry center.

The problems it shows

Airflow in a closed closet

A recess with a solid door and a vent that bends sharply behind the unit starves the dryer of air. Long cycles and tripped thermal fuses follow.

Drum rollers and glides

The drum rides on rollers and slides, and the same wear appears here as anywhere. It is simply louder and more noticeable when the dryer sits above head height.

Door switch and hinge

An upper door is opened at an awkward angle all day long. Its switch and hinge take more strain than on a dryer that sits on the floor.

The shared frame on a laundry center

On a single-frame unit, the dryer's controls and power supply share a cabinet with the bottom half. A dead display can be a dryer part or a shared one.

Getting at it,
and whether to.

Many repairs mean pulling the stacked pair out of the closet and sometimes lifting the dryer down to reach its back.

What repairs cost

On the visit

  1. Two people and floor protection are part of the job when the pair has to come out of a recess.
  2. In condos and apartments the vent may join a shared shaft or roof exhaust, which limits what can be done from inside the unit.
  3. The stacking kit is checked and refitted, since a dryer that walks on its brackets vibrates and wears faster.

Repair or replace

A stacked pair is sized to its closet, and a replacement that fits the same opening with the same vent position is not always easy to find. That keeps repair the better choice for most belt, heater and switch failures. A laundry center is harder, because one serious failure in either half raises the question for the whole frame.

Questions about
stackable dryers.

Does the dryer have to come down to be repaired?
Not always. Door switches, controls and many sensor jobs can be done from the front. Belt, roller, heater and vent work often needs the pair pulled out, and some of it needs the dryer lifted off its stacking kit.
Why does my stacked dryer take so long in a closet?
A closed closet door and a vent that makes tight turns both starve the dryer of air. Most closet installations need a louvered door or a gap for makeup air, and a short, smooth vent run.
Is a laundry center repaired differently from a stacked pair?
The dryer parts are much the same. The difference is that a laundry center shares one frame and often one control panel, so the diagnosis has to separate the dryer's own parts from the shared ones.
Can any dryer be stacked?
No. Stacking needs a front-loading dryer and a matching kit from the same product family. A dryer set on top without the right kit can shift and fall.
Why is the noise so much worse on a stacked dryer?
The dryer sits higher, closer to your ears, and the pair acts like one tall cabinet that carries vibration. Worn rollers and a loose stacking kit are the two causes found most often.
