What the dryer diagnostic visit
involves.

A dryer diagnostic visit starts with a timed test load and a thermometer at the exhaust, because most complaints are about heat or time and both can be measured. The technician checks the power supply or the gas supply, the lint path and the vent before opening the cabinet, then tests the heat source, the safety parts, the drive and the controls in turn. A good share of visits end at the vent, and the rest end with one part named and priced.

How the visit goes

Diagnostic visit,
step by step.

Name the failed part, give the price, and say so plainly if the drum, bearings or age make the dryer poor value.

01

Run the dryer on a timed heat setting and read the exhaust temperature and airflow at the outside hood.

02

Check the supply: both legs of a 240-volt circuit on an electric unit, or the shut-off and the burner sequence on a gas unit.

03

Look at the lint screen housing, the duct and the hood flap, because a restricted vent explains most slow and hot dryers.

04

Test the heater or burner parts, the thermal fuse and thermostats, the belt, the motor and the door switch with a meter rather than by swapping them.

05

Name the failed part, give the price, and say so plainly if the drum, bearings or age make the dryer poor value.

A price before
any work.

Everything on this page is a band rather than a quote. A dryer that will not heat can need a blown fuse and a vent cleaning, or a new heating element, or gas valve coils, and there is no way to tell which over the phone. A number offered before anyone has measured the heat and the airflow is either a guess or the price of the worst case. You hear the real price of the real repair before work starts, and the choice stays with you.

Diagnostic visit,
where we come out.

The laundry room, the climate and the building all change how the dryer diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

In Tampa Bay a slow-drying complaint is tested against the vent before anything else, because humid Gulf air already stretches dry times and a partly blocked duct stretches them further; airflow at the outside hood is measured before the heat source is blamed.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's newer houses often put the laundry in an interior room with the exhaust climbing through the attic to a roof cap, so a diagnostic visit there follows the whole length of that run as well as testing the dryer itself.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In a Miami condo the visit often begins by learning what the building allows: some towers send every unit's exhaust into a shared duct, others were fitted with ventless dryers, and the diagnosis follows whichever arrangement is actually installed.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

A New York diagnostic frequently happens in a laundry closet holding a compact or stacked dryer, often a ventless one, and most checks are made where the machine stands, because sliding it out of that closet is rarely simple.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston houses are split between gas and electric dryer hookups, so a diagnostic there starts by confirming which one is installed, then sorts out whether the heat source, the airflow or the controls explain the symptom.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Around Chicagoland the dryer is often in a basement, and a diagnostic visit traces the duct from the back of the machine to where it leaves the foundation, since a long basement run is a common reason a healthy dryer seems slow.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Many Los Angeles houses keep the laundry in the garage, with a gas dryer venting through the garage wall, so the visit looks at the gas supply, the burner and the exhaust path as one system.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego laundry closets tend to be small, tucked into a hallway or the garage, and a diagnostic there confirms the dryer has enough make-up air and that its duct is not crushed flat behind the cabinet.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

In an older Bay Area flat the dryer may have been added long after the building went up, in a closet or on a back porch, so the diagnostic looks hard at how the vent was routed and what circuit or gas line the dryer was tied into.

Questions about
the dryer diagnostic visit.

Is the diagnostic fee credited toward the repair?
That depends on the company, so ask when you book and have the answer before anyone arrives. Settling it at the invoice is too late to change your mind.
Can a dryer problem be diagnosed over the phone?
A good description narrows it down. A drum that turns with no heat points at the heat source or a safety part, and a hum with no tumble points at the belt or the motor. Proving which part failed takes a meter and a look inside.
How long does a dryer diagnostic take?
Usually under an hour. A stacked dryer in a closet that has to be pulled out, or a long vent that has to be checked from the roof or an outside wall, takes longer. When the part is on the van, the repair can often follow in the same visit.
Should I clean the lint screen before the technician arrives?
Clean it as you always would, but leave the vent and the hood alone. What the duct looks like, and how much lint sits in it, is part of the evidence for a slow or overheating dryer.
