What the dryer motor repair and blower wheel replacement
involves.

On most vented dryers one drive motor does two jobs: one end of its shaft turns the belt, the other spins the blower wheel that pulls air through the drum and pushes it out the vent. A worn motor hums without starting, stops when hot, or grinds as its bearings go. A cracked or loose blower wheel rattles and moves less air, so the dryer runs longer and hotter. Dryer motor repair is the largest drive job on most machines, and it is done only after the belt, the door switch and the fuse check out.

How the visit goes

Motor and blower repair,
step by step.

Measure airflow at the outside hood and check that the motor starts cleanly on a full load.

01

Confirm the start circuit works and the door switch, belt switch and thermal fuse pass, since each can stop a sound motor.

02

Listen at the motor and turn the blower by hand to separate worn motor bearings from a loose or cracked blower wheel.

03

Clear lint from the blower housing, and replace the motor, the blower wheel or both as tested.

04

Measure airflow at the outside hood and check that the motor starts cleanly on a full load.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A blower wheel packed with damp lint is a common find in Tampa Bay, where humid air keeps lint clinging inside the housing, and a dryer that heats but will not dry often has a choked blower rather than a failed element.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando dryers pushing air through long attic ducts keep the blower working against resistance for years, and a motor that hums without starting or a cracked blower wheel is the usual outcome.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In towers where dryers exhaust into a shared building duct, a weak blower struggles against the back pressure, so the technician checks both the motor and how freely the building duct accepts air before replacing anything.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

A New York compact dryer has a small motor working hard in a closet with little make-up air, and one that trips its internal overload and restarts is often starved of air rather than worn out.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston's heat puts laundry rooms in garages and on exterior walls under real strain, and a drive motor that stops mid-cycle and restarts after cooling down is a common call there.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A Chicagoland dryer that has run in the same basement for many years often needs its motor bearings or blower wheel attended to, and a motor that hums without turning is checked for a seized blower before it is condemned.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

In Los Angeles houses where the dryer sits in the garage, dust and pet hair settle into the blower housing, and a louder dryer that also dries more slowly usually needs that housing opened and cleaned along with any motor work.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego's mild weather keeps many laundry doors open to a yard or garage, and a blower wheel caked with lint and outdoor dust is a frequent reason a motor overheats and shuts itself down.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

In older Bay Area buildings the blower may be pushing through a vent that climbs or turns several times, and a motor running hot from that load is best repaired together with a shorter, straighter duct where the building allows one.

Questions about
the dryer motor repair and blower wheel replacement.

My dryer hums but will not start. Is the motor dead?
It may be, but a broken belt, a jammed blower wheel or an item caught in the drum can all stall a sound motor. If the drum turns freely by hand and the motor still only hums, the motor or its start switch is the likely cause.
Why does my dryer stop after twenty minutes?
A motor that overheats shuts itself off with a built-in protector and starts again once it cools. Worn bearings, lint packed around the motor and a restricted vent are the usual reasons it overheats.
Is a motor worth replacing on an older dryer?
Often it is. The motor is the largest drive part, but a dryer with a sound drum and heat source still has years in it. On a very old dryer that also needs rollers and a heater, the combined cost is worth weighing.
What does the blower wheel do?
It moves all the air through the dryer. When it cracks or comes loose on its shaft, the dryer rattles and airflow drops, so clothes take longer and the heater parts run hotter than they should.
