Switch it off before anything else

Treat this as a fire risk. Stop the dryer now, unplug it or switch off its breaker, and do not restart it to see if the smell comes back. Clear the lint only after the drum and cabinet are cool. If you see smoke or flame, leave the house and call emergency services from outside.

What it
usually means.

A dryer that smells like something is burning is telling you heat is reaching a place it should not. Most often that place is lint: packed in the vent run, piled under the drum, or caught around the heater housing, where it scorches long before it flames. Less often the smell is electrical, from a wire, a terminal block or a motor running hot. A faint dusty smell on the first run of the fall is normal; a sharp or growing smell on an ordinary load is not, and it is the one dryer symptom that should never be run through to the end of the cycle.

Answer these first

01

Does it smell like scorched cloth and dust, or like hot plastic and wiring?

02

Is the smell strongest at the drum opening, at the back of the cabinet, or outside at the vent hood?

03

Is the outside of the cabinet or the top panel hotter to the touch than usual?

04

Has drying time grown longer over the past few weeks?

05

Did the smell start with one load, such as rubber-backed rugs or items stained with oil or cleaning solvent?

Dryer burning smell: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Stop the dryer, unplug it or switch off its breaker, and let it cool before you touch anything inside.

02

Once the dryer is cool, pull the lint screen and look into the slot beneath it with a flashlight for packed lint.

03

Go outside while someone else starts the dryer briefly and feel for a strong flow of air at the vent hood.

Also worth checking

  • Look behind the dryer for a crushed, kinked or foil duct and for lint sitting on the floor.
  • Note whether the smell was scorched cloth or hot wiring; say which when you book.

5 things dryer burning smell turns out to be, from lint packed in the vent run to overheating motor or burned terminal.

The cost guide
  1. 01 low

Lint packed in the vent run

When the duct behind the dryer is crushed or clogged, hot air backs up into the cabinet and bakes the lint that collects there. This is the classic path to a dryer fire, and it usually shows up first as longer drying times.

  2. 02 low

Lint built up inside the cabinet

Lint that slips past the screen settles around the heater box, the burner and the motor. Removing it means opening the cabinet, which is part of any visit for this smell.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Heating element touching the housing

A coil that has sagged or broken can arc against its metal housing and scorch whatever lint is nearby. It often leaves the dryer heating on and off.

  4. 04 low

    Worn belt or seized pulley

A belt slipping on a pulley that no longer turns freely smells of hot rubber. A squeal before the smell points strongly here.

  5. 05 moderate

    Overheating motor or burned terminal

A motor struggling against worn bearings runs hot, and a loose connection at the power cord terminal block can char. Both smell electrical rather than dusty.

Questions about
dryer burning smell.

The smell went away after I cleaned the lint screen. Am I done?
Probably not. The screen catches most lint but not all of it, and the smell usually comes from lint that got past it into the duct or the cabinet. A clean screen with a strong flow at the outside hood is a good sign; weak airflow outside means the problem is still there.
Is a burning smell normal with a new dryer?
A light smell during the first few loads is common as coatings on the heater burn off. It should fade within a few cycles and never be sharp. A new dryer that smells hot on every load is usually connected to an old or crushed duct.
Can dryer sheets or a rug cause the smell?
Rubber-backed rugs and items that held oil, gasoline or solvents can scorch at normal dryer temperatures, and those should never go in a dryer. Dryer sheets do not burn, but their residue builds up on the lint screen and cuts airflow, which raises the heat.
Should I call a vent cleaner or a repair technician?
It depends on where the smell comes from. If airflow at the outside hood is weak, the vent is the first suspect. If airflow is strong and the smell remains, the source is inside the dryer. A technician who checks both on the same visit saves a second trip.
