What the dryer belt replacement and drum roller repair
involves.

The drum is turned by one long, thin ribbed belt wrapped around it and held tight by a spring-loaded idler pulley on the motor. The drum rides on support rollers at the back and on glides or slides at the front. Every part of that drive wears with load weight and hours, and each announces itself with its own sound. A dryer belt replacement is the usual answer to a motor that runs with a still drum, and the rollers and pulley are checked while the drum is out.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Heavy pool and beach towels are a steady load in Tampa Bay dryers, and the drum rollers and belt wear faster under them; a squeal or thump that grows louder week by week is usually rollers ready to be replaced.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando households with frequent guests or a short-term rental run the dryer long and often, and worn drum rollers, glides and belts are what that schedule wears out first.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In a Miami condo a thumping drum carries through floors and walls, so worn rollers or a tired belt tensioner are often reported by a neighbor almost as soon as by the owner.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Stacked dryers in New York closets are hard to reach, and a belt or roller repair may mean lifting the dryer off its partner in a tight space, which is why the visit runs longer than the part suggests.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Large Houston households run the dryer daily, and a snapped belt or a flattened roller is a familiar result; while the drum is out, its seams are checked for anything that snags clothes.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A basement dryer in an older Chicagoland house may stand on uneven concrete, and a drum that rumbles or walks can be worn rollers, a stretched belt or simply a machine that has fallen out of level.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

In a Los Angeles garage laundry, grit tracked in from outside reaches the drum glides and felt seals, and a scraping sound on an older model is often a worn front glide rather than a failing motor.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Sandy beach towels are a San Diego fixture, and sand that gets past the lint screen grinds at drum seals and glides; a scraping noise from a coastal dryer is often traced to exactly that.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

In a Bay Area flat where the dryer shares a wall or a floor with a neighbor, a worn roller or idler pulley is noticed as noise well before it fails, and replacing both rollers together is usually the better repair.

Questions about
the dryer belt replacement and drum roller repair.

The motor runs but the drum does not turn. Is it the belt?
Very often. A snapped or slipped belt leaves the motor spinning freely. On many dryers a switch on the idler arm stops the motor when the belt breaks, so a dryer that will not start at all can also have a broken belt.
Why does my dryer thump when it runs?
A flat spot on a drum roller thumps once per turn of the drum. A heavy, damp item such as a rug or a pair of sneakers can do the same. Worn rollers are usually replaced as a pair.
What causes a high-pitched squeal?
A dry idler pulley or worn rollers most often. A squeal that starts at the beginning of a cycle and fades as the dryer warms is typical of a pulley bearing near the end of its life.
Why are there black marks on my clothes?
Worn front glides or a torn drum seal can let clothing catch at the edge of the drum, where it picks up grease or dark rubbing marks. It is fixed at the front bulkhead, not with a new drum.
