Is yours
a ventless?

A ventless dryer never sends air through the wall. A condenser model heats air, passes it over a heat exchanger cooled by room air, and collects the water it condenses. A heat-pump model does the same job with a small sealed refrigerant circuit that heats and cools the air in a loop. Both drain into a removable tank or a hose, and both depend on filters and passages that must stay clean. Many are 24-inch compacts built for closets and apartments.

How to tell

01

There is no vent duct behind the dryer, only a power cord and sometimes a small drain hose.

02

A drawer or a tank at the top or bottom collects water and needs emptying after cycles.

03

Behind a kick plate at the bottom there is a condenser or a second lint filter to clean.

04

It is often 24 inches wide and stacks on a compact partner, or sits in a closet with no outside wall.

What fails
on this design.

On a ventless dryer: clogged condenser or heat exchanger, condensate pump and tank sensor, heat-pump compressor and circuit, seals around the filter and drawer.

The problems it shows

Clogged condenser or heat exchanger

Lint that gets past the door filter settles on the exchanger fins. Airflow drops, cycles stretch past two hours and clothes come out damp and warm.

Condensate pump and tank sensor

A small pump lifts water to the tank or the drain hose. When it stalls, the dryer stops with a full-tank warning, or water finds its way onto the floor.

Heat-pump compressor and circuit

On a heat-pump model a small compressor does the heating. A weak circuit shows up as cycles that grow longer month by month rather than as a sudden stop.

Seals around the filter and drawer

A worn or misplaced seal lets moist air bypass the exchanger. The room gets humid and the drying time grows.

Getting at it,
and whether to.

Most ventless repairs start at the kick plate filter and the condenser, which are reached from the front.

What repairs cost

On the visit

  1. A heat-pump circuit is a sealed system, and any work that opens it is done under the rules for refrigerant.
  2. The drain route is traced end to end, since a kinked hose or a raised standpipe imitates a failed pump.
  3. A compact unit stacked on a small partner often has to come down for motor and belt work.

Repair or replace

Filters, pumps, sensors and belts on a ventless dryer are straightforward repairs, and they are well worth doing because these machines cost more to replace than a basic vented dryer. A failed heat-pump compressor is the one repair that can outweigh the value of an older unit.

Questions about
ventless dryers.

Why does my ventless dryer take so long?
Ventless dryers run cooler than vented ones and cycles are naturally longer. When a cycle grows well past its usual length, the condenser or the second filter is almost always coated with lint and needs cleaning.
Is it normal for a ventless dryer to make the room warm?
Some warmth is normal, since the heat has to go somewhere. A condenser model warms the room more than a heat-pump model. A room that becomes damp or steamy is not normal and points at a seal or a clogged exchanger.
Where does the water go?
Into a tank you empty by hand, or through a drain hose to a standpipe or a sink. A small pump moves it there. If the tank warning comes on with an empty tank, the pump or the tank sensor is usually the cause.
Can the heat-pump circuit itself be repaired?
Its heating circuit works on the same principle and is a sealed system. Most visits never touch it, because filters, pumps, sensors and the drive cause far more calls. When the circuit itself has failed, the repair is weighed carefully against the age of the dryer.
Does a ventless dryer need a 240-volt outlet?
It depends on the model. Many 24-inch condenser dryers run on 240 volts, while a number of heat-pump models plug into a standard 120-volt outlet. The label on the dryer says which, and it must match the outlet.
