A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting the house from an electrical problem. Stop using the dryer, leave its breaker off or unplug it, and do not reset it repeatedly. If you smell burning or see scorching at the cord, keep the power off until a technician has looked at it.

What it
usually means.

A breaker trips when more current flows than the circuit is built for, or when current leaks to ground. On an electric dryer, the heating element is by far the largest load, so a trip that happens when the heat comes on points at the element, its wiring or a short to the cabinet. A trip at startup points at the motor or the power cord connection. A 240V dryer breaker is two breakers tied together, and one half can trip while the other holds, which leaves the drum turning with no heat. Repeated tripping is a sign of an electrical problem, not a breaker that needs resetting again.

Answer these first

01

Does it trip the moment you press start, or a little later when the heat comes on?

02

Does it trip on an air-only setting, or only on a heated cycle?

03

Is the dryer on its own breaker, or does the circuit feed other outlets too?

04

Is there any scorch mark or melted plastic at the plug or the cord connection on the back?

05

Has the dryer been moved recently, or the power cord changed?

Check these
before you book.

Dryer tripping breaker: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Leave the breaker off and unplug the dryer; do not keep resetting it to see if it holds.

02

Note exactly when it tripped: at start, when the heat came on, or at a random point.

03

With the power off, look at the plug and the outlet for scorch marks or melted plastic.

Also worth checking

  • Check the panel label to confirm the dryer has its own double breaker.
  • Tell us whether the dryer is electric or gas; a gas dryer draws far less and trips for different reasons.

5 things dryer tripping breaker turns out to be, from heating element shorted to ground to worn or undersized breaker.

The cost guide
  1. 01 low to moderate

    Heating element shorted to ground

A broken coil touching the heater housing sends current to the cabinet. It trips on heat and not on air-only, which is a useful clue.

  2. 02 low

Burned terminal block or loose cord

The connection where the power cord meets the dryer can loosen and overheat. Scorching there is a hazard in its own right and needs repair before the dryer runs again.

  3. 03 low to moderate

Moisture or a damaged wire inside

A wire chafed against the cabinet, or water reaching a connection, leaks current to ground. It can trip only on some loads, which makes it look random.

  4. 04 moderate

    Motor drawing too much current

A motor straining against a seized pulley, a failed roller or worn bearings pulls more current at startup than it should.

  5. 05 varies

    Worn or undersized breaker

Breakers do wear, and a dryer sharing a circuit it was not meant to share will trip for reasons that are not in the dryer. That fix belongs to an electrician.

Questions about
dryer tripping breaker.

The drum turns but there is no heat. Could that be the breaker?
Yes. A 240V dryer breaker has two halves, and when one trips, the motor can keep running on the other while the heating element gets nothing. Switch the dryer's breaker fully off, then back on, before assuming the heater has failed.
Does a gas dryer trip breakers?
Less often. A gas dryer runs on a standard 120V outlet and uses power only for the motor, the drum light, the igniter and the controls. A trip there usually points at the motor or a shared circuit.
Is it the dryer or the house wiring?
If the dryer trips on its own dedicated breaker and only when the heat comes on, the dryer is the likely cause. If other outlets share the circuit or it trips with the dryer unplugged, an electrician should look at the circuit.
Can I just install a bigger breaker?
No. The breaker is sized to protect the wire in the wall, not the dryer. A larger breaker lets that wire overheat, which is a fire risk.
