What the dryer heating element repair
involves.

On an electric model the dryer heating element is a coil of resistance wire strung inside a metal duct behind or beneath the drum. When it breaks, the drum still turns and the air stays cold. When it touches its housing, it can trip the breaker or keep heating after it should stop. The element rarely fails on its own: a restricted vent makes it run hot for years, so the repair covers the coil, the hi-limit thermostat and the thermal fuse beside it, and the airflow that caused the failure.

How the visit goes

Heating element repair,
step by step.

Fit the new element, then check the exhaust temperature and the vent airflow on a full timed cycle.

01

Confirm 240 volts at the terminal block, since one tripped leg imitates a dead coil.

02

Test the element for continuity and for any short to its housing, and inspect the coil for breaks and sagging.

03

Test the hi-limit thermostat, the cycling thermostat and the thermal fuse, which often fail with the element.

04

Fit the new element, then check the exhaust temperature and the vent airflow on a full timed cycle.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Electric dryers are the usual choice across much of Tampa Bay, and an element that has burned open is a routine repair; the vent that made it run hot is cleared on the same visit so the new coil is not lost the same way.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In Orlando's all-electric houses the element carries the whole drying load, and in a builder-installed laundry room a long attic duct is often what pushed the old one past its limit.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Condo dryers in South Florida are mostly electric, and when the element fails the technician also checks its terminals and the high-limit thermostat, because damp air and long exhaust runs keep that circuit working hard.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In a New York apartment with an in-unit dryer, the machine is often a compact electric model whose element is specific to it, so the replacement is matched to the exact model rather than to a full-size part.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Where a Houston household runs an electric dryer, a burned element often appears after a summer of heavy towel loads in muggy air, and the repair includes the terminal block and cord, which can scorch when a connection loosens.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland's electric dryers are found mostly in condos and newer suburban houses, and an element that quits in winter is sometimes blamed on a cold basement when the coil has simply opened.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles households with an electric dryer, often in an apartment or a remodel with no gas at the laundry, usually lose an element to lint buildup, so the duct is cleaned whenever the element is replaced.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Newer San Diego developments frequently put an electric dryer in an upstairs laundry room, and an element repair there comes with a look at the exhaust run to the roof or side wall, which is usually longer than it appears.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area households moving away from gas often end up with an electric or heat-pump dryer, and when an electric model stops heating, the technician confirms the circuit is delivering full voltage before condemning the element.

Questions about
the dryer heating element repair.

How do I know the heating element is the problem?
A drum that turns with no heat at all, on a dryer whose breaker is fully on, is the usual sign. The same symptom comes from a blown thermal fuse or an open thermostat, so the element is tested with a meter rather than assumed.
Why did my new heating element fail so quickly?
Almost always because the airflow was never fixed. A crushed duct, a clogged hood or lint packed inside the cabinet keeps the coil too hot, and the new one goes the same way. The vent is part of this repair.
My dryer gets hot on some settings but not others. Is that the element?
Usually not. An element either heats or it does not. Heat on high but not on low or medium points at the cycling thermostat, the heat selector or the control, which choose how the element is switched.
Is a sparking or glowing coil dangerous?
Yes. A broken coil can arc against its housing. Stop the dryer, switch off the breaker, and do not use it until the element and its housing have been checked.
