What Manhattan does
to a dryer.
Where dryers sit in Manhattan: tower living, older housing stock, small homes.
All of New York MetroTower living
A dryer in a tower rarely vents straight outside. The exhaust may travel a long horizontal duct to an exterior wall or join a shared riser, and every foot of that run adds resistance that shows up as longer cycles and a hotter cabinet.
Older housing stock
Houses built before home dryers were common got one wherever a circuit or gas line could be run, and the wiring may be older than the machine. A dryer that trips its breaker or runs without heat is sometimes reporting on the house's circuit rather than on itself.
Small homes
Compact and stacked dryers are harder to service in place, and reaching the back panel may mean easing the machine partway out of a closet that was built around it. A careful visit protects the floor, the door frame and whatever sits beneath the dryer.

Battery Park City
By 2018 Battery Park City held thirty residential buildings, and no further construction was planned.
Greenwich Village
Inside the Village's historic district, redevelopment is severely restricted and a renovation must keep the building's main facade.
SoHo
New York's 1982 Loft Law legalized the artists' living spaces in SoHo's former manufacturing lofts and gave them rent protection.
Tribeca
Loft conversions often have room for a full-size stacked pair, but cutting a vent through old masonry is restricted, so ventless and heat-pump dryers are common.
Upper East Side
In a pre-war apartment an in-unit dryer is often something the building permits with conditions, and many are compact ventless models tucked into a closet.
Upper West Side
The Dakota, a co-op at 72nd Street and Central Park West, is the oldest surviving luxury apartment building in New York City.
