Protected exteriors and historic district rules can limit where a new dryer vent may exit, which is one reason ventless dryers turn up in older buildings. Where the old vent has to stay, it is cleaned and checked more often, not less.

Family houses

Many family homes keep the laundry in a garage, basement or mudroom, with the dryer vent running through a wall or up into the attic. Children's clothes, pet hair and full loads fill that vent more quickly than a small household would.
