What Memorial does

Before Houston annexed it, the Memorial area was made up of large country estates and farmland.

A flood-control project finished in the 1950s created Barker Reservoir west of the area and channelized Buffalo Bayou from State Highway 6 to Beltway 8.

As of 2004 Memorial Bend had about 350 houses, most of them mid-century modern and ranch houses from the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Many family homes keep the laundry in a garage, basement or mudroom, with the dryer vent running through a wall or up into the attic. Children's clothes, pet hair and full loads fill that vent more quickly than a small household would.

Where patios, lanais and outdoor kitchens wrap the house, the dryer's exterior hood can end up beside a grill, under a deck or behind planters. Hot exhaust needs open air around it, and a hood tucked into a covered corner pushes lint and moisture back toward the wall.
