Speed Queen dryers,
specifically.

Speed Queen home dryers are made by Alliance Laundry Systems and keep a plain, heavy-duty layout. Their display codes are few, so most visits are diagnosed from the symptom and the machine itself rather than from a code.

The Speed Queen lineup

What is particular
to Speed Queen.

Home Speed Queen dryers come in electric and gas, as standalone units and stacked washer-dryers, with electronic models offering steam and a pet hair cycle. The model decides whether there is a display at all.

The motor protects itself

A motor overload protector stops the drive motor if it overloads, and the two-digit display alternates Er and ro. It resets once cool; a second trip is the manufacturer's signal to take the dryer out of use.

The lint filter sits low in the door opening

The filter is at the front of the dryer in the lower part of the door opening, and once a year it should be removed along with its screw so the duct beneath can be vacuumed. That pocket is easy to miss and fills slowly over years.

No heat is often a setting

Speed Queen's own checklist for a dryer that will not heat starts with the controls: a cycle in its cooling part, the Extended light on, or the temperature set to No Heat. Ruling those out takes a minute.

A blinking dot is normal

When the control is off, the right-most decimal point in the display blinks every one to five minutes to show Idle Mode. It is not a code and needs nothing.

Parts

Mechanical parts on these dryers are built for heavy use and are rarely the weak point. Electronic controls and less common parts may need to be ordered in rather than carried on the truck.

Repair or replace

A Speed Queen is built to be repaired, and heat, motor, belt or door work is nearly always worth doing. Only severe cabinet or drum damage makes replacement worth discussing.

Questions about
Speed Queen dryers.

My Speed Queen dryer display shows Er and ro. What happened?
The motor overload protector stopped the motor. Press Start to clear it, let the motor cool and try again; if it trips again, Speed Queen says to remove the dryer from use, so book a visit.
Why does a dot keep blinking on my Speed Queen dryer when it is off?
That is Idle Mode. After a few minutes without a key press the right-most decimal point blinks every one to five minutes, and pressing Power/Cancel wakes the display.
My Speed Queen runs but gives no heat. What should I check?
Make sure the cycle is not in its cooling part, the Extended light is off and the temperature is not set to No Heat. On an electric model check both breakers, and on a gas model confirm the gas valve is open, then book a visit if it is still cold.
