Kenmore dryers,
specifically.

Kenmore dryers were built for Sears by outside manufacturers, and Sears published a separate error-code chart for each model-number prefix. The first three digits on the rating plate decide which chart applies, so the same letters can mean different things on two Kenmore dryers.

The Kenmore lineup

What is particular
to Kenmore.

Kenmore and Kenmore Elite dryers span electronic-control models under several prefixes, steam models, and a compact condensing dryer. The prefix and the control type matter more than the age, because they decide the parts and the code chart.

The prefix picks the code chart

Sears lists codes separately for models beginning 110, 417 and 796, and again for the compact condensing dryer. Reading the model number from the rating plate is the first step on any Kenmore code call.

Some models blink the code instead of showing it

On 417 models without a digital display, four indicator lights flash the first digit and the Start light flashes the second. Counting the flashes before unplugging the dryer keeps the code from being lost.

A tech sheet lives in the console

Sears notes that the 796 models carry a tech sheet, usually stored inside the console, that explains a diagnostic test mode. Leaving it in place saves time on the visit.

The compact condensing model pumps its water

Kenmore's compact condensing dryer drains condensed water through a pump and hose, and it checks the supply voltage against a 208 to 240 volt window. Its codes therefore include water and power problems that a vented dryer never shows.

Parts

Parts are ordered by the full Kenmore model number, and common items such as thermistors, belts, door switches and heating parts are usually easy to find. Control boards for older prefixes can take longer.

Repair or replace

A mechanical or sensor repair on a Kenmore is usually worth doing. On an older model that also needs a hard-to-find control board, pricing a replacement alongside is reasonable.

Questions about
Kenmore dryers.

Why do Kenmore dryer codes depend on the model number?
Kenmore dryers came from more than one manufacturer, and Sears published a different chart for each prefix such as 110, 417 and 796. The prefix is the start of the model number on the rating plate; read it before looking up any code.
My Kenmore has no display. How do I read a code?
On 417 models without a digital display, the indicator lights flash the first digit and the Start light flashes the second, with ten flashes standing for A. Count both sets and note them before you unplug.
Can a Kenmore compact condensing dryer leak water?
It can, because it pumps condensed water out through a drain hose. Sears lists a drain pump code for it and tells owners to check the pump and hose for a clog before anything else.
