What it
usually means.
An error code is the dryer telling you which check failed: air did not flow, heat did not rise or would not stop rising, a sensor stopped answering, the door read as open, or on a ventless dryer the water had nowhere to go. The same characters mean different things on different makes, and many dryers also display codes that are reminders rather than failures, such as a clogged vent warning or a full water container. The exact code, with the model number from the label inside the door frame, is what makes it useful.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
What exactly does the display show, including letters, numbers and any dashes?
Does the code come back after you reset the dryer?
Did the code appear at start, partway through, or at the end of the cycle?
Is the dryer heating, turning, or doing nothing when the code shows?
What is the model number on the label inside the door frame or on the back?
Check these
before you book.
Dryer error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Write down the code exactly as it appears, including letters that look like numbers.
Find the model number on the label inside the door frame or on the back panel.
Clean the lint screen and check airflow outside, since airflow codes are common.
Also worth checking
- Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker for five minutes and see if the code returns.
- Look up the code in the owner's manual; some codes are reminders, not failures.
How soon does it need a visit?
Most codes are not urgent. If a code appears with a burning smell, a hot cabinet or a gas smell, follow those steps instead: stop the dryer, cut the power, and for gas leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

5 things dryer error code turns out to be, from restricted airflow warning to motor or communication code.
The cost guide-
01 low
Restricted airflow warning
Many dryers watch exhaust temperature and warn when the vent is restricted. It is one of the most common codes and a reason to clean the vent.
-
02 low to moderate
Heating or thermistor code
The control saw heat that did not rise, rose too high, or a thermistor reading that made no sense.
-
03 low
Door or lock code
The door switch read as open when the control expected it closed.
-
04 low to moderate
Water container or pump code
On a ventless dryer, a full container or a pump that cannot move water stops the cycle.
-
05 moderate
Motor or communication code
The control lost track of the drum motor, or the boards stopped talking to each other, even with the parts intact.
