What it
usually means.
When the display works but the drum does not turn, the dryer has power and the control has refused to start or the motor could not. The control waits for a closed door, a released child lock and a start button it can read. The motor needs an intact belt switch path, a working start winding, and a drum that is free to turn. A hum with no movement usually means the motor is trying against a load it cannot move; silence usually means the control never asked it to try.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Do the lights or display come on when you open the door or press a button?
Do you hear a hum, a click, or nothing at all when you press start?
Is a lock symbol or a child lock light showing on the panel?
Does the drum turn freely by hand with the door open?
Did the dryer stop suddenly in the middle of a load the last time it ran?
Check these
before you book.
Dryer not starting: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Look for a lock symbol and hold the control lock button, usually marked on the panel, for three seconds.
Close the door firmly and listen for the click of the switch; try pressing near the latch while starting.
With the dryer unplugged, turn the drum by hand; very loose means a broken belt, stuck means something is jammed.
Also worth checking
- Check that a start button press is held for a second or two; many panels ignore a quick tap.
- Note whether you hear a hum; that single detail separates a motor problem from a control one.
How soon does it need a visit?
Not urgent. A dryer that does not start is not a hazard. If it hums without turning, do not keep pressing start, because the motor heats up while it strains.

5 things dryer not starting turns out to be, from child lock or control lock on to motor or start switch failure.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Child lock or control lock on
Many dryers have a lock that disables start. It is usually released by holding one button, marked on the panel, for a few seconds.
-
02 low
Door switch not closing
The dryer will not start unless the switch reads the door as shut. A broken actuator or a worn switch leaves it seeing an open door.
-
03 low
Broken drum belt
On many dryers, a belt that snaps opens a switch at the idler that stops the motor from starting. The drum then turns loosely by hand.
-
04 low
Thermal fuse on a motor circuit
On some designs the thermal fuse sits in the motor circuit, so an overheat stops the whole dryer rather than just the heat.
-
05 moderate
Motor or start switch failure
A hum without movement after the drum is confirmed free points at the motor's start switch or windings.
