Choosing and comparing,
guide by guide.

This section is for two situations: planning a laundry space and picking a dryer for it, or standing beside a dryer that has just failed and weighing another repair against a new machine. The guides compare kinds of dryer rather than brands, because the kind decides what the house has to supply, where the machine can stand and what a later repair will look like.

Repair or replace a dryer: what decides it

Fuses, belts, rollers and heaters are worth fixing on almost any dryer; a rusted drum or a heat-pump compressor usually is not.

Gas, electric or ventless: choosing a dryer for your house

The hookups behind the laundry space settle most of it; running cost, cycle length and later repairs settle the rest.

Stackable dryers and laundry centers: how they differ

A stacked pair is two machines on a kit, a laundry center is one; that difference decides fit, service and replacement.

Which dryer suits the house.

We write from the service side. We see which designs open up easily for a belt or a heater, which ones hide their duct behind a closet stack for years, and which failures are cheap on one type and costly on another. A showroom tag says little about any of that.

Read these first if you are remodeling, moving to a home with different hookups, or holding an estimate and wondering whether the dryer is worth it.

Questions about
choosing and comparing.

Do these guides rank dryer brands?
No. They compare gas, electric, ventless and stacked designs across makers, and name a maker only where its own published guidance backs a specific point.
I rent. Does any of this apply to me?
The ventless and compact material does, since those machines need no new vent. The repair-or-replace guide is useful to share with a landlord deciding about a failed dryer.
Can these guides tell me what is wrong with my dryer?
They explain how the type of dryer shapes the decision. Finding the actual failure takes the model number and a look at the machine, which the troubleshooting section and a diagnostic visit cover.
