What it
usually means.
The drum on almost every home dryer is turned by a single long belt wrapped around it and around the motor pulley, kept tight by a spring-loaded idler pulley. When the drum stops turning while the motor still runs, the belt has broken or slipped, or the drum is too hard to turn because a roller, glide or bearing has seized. If the motor itself is silent, the search moves to the motor, its start switch or the door switch. The feel of the drum by hand, loose or stiff, tells most of the story.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
With the dryer unplugged, does the drum turn very easily by hand, or is it stiff?
Can you hear the motor running while the drum is still?
Was there a thump, squeal or rumble before it stopped?
Does the drum start turning when you give it a push?
Is there a burned rubber smell near the dryer?

Dryer not spinning: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand; very loose points at the belt, very stiff at a roller or something jammed.
Look around the drum opening and the door seal for a sock, wire or coin caught at the edge.
Listen when you press start: a running motor with a still drum and a humming motor mean different things.
Also worth checking
- Note any squeal, thump or rumble in the days before it stopped.
- Do not keep running the dryer with a still drum; the heat stays in one spot on the clothes.
How soon does it need a visit?
Not urgent, but do not run heat with the drum stopped: the clothes sit against the heater outlet and can scorch. Unplug the dryer until the belt or roller is fixed.

5 things dryer not spinning turns out to be, from item jammed at the drum edge to motor not turning.
The cost guide-
01 lowest
Item jammed at the drum edge
A sock or a bra wire caught between the drum and the front panel can lock the drum. Removing it may need the front panel off.
-
02 low
Broken drum belt
A belt that snaps leaves a drum that spins freely by hand and a motor that runs with nothing to drive. It is the most common reason.
-
03 low
Worn or seized idler pulley
The idler keeps the belt tight. When it fails, the belt slips or jumps off, often after weeks of squealing.
-
04 low to moderate
Failed drum rollers or glides
Rollers under the back of the drum and glides at the front wear flat. A stiff drum strains the belt and motor until one of them gives.
-
05 moderate
Motor not turning
A motor that only hums, or one whose shaft is worn, cannot turn the drum even with a good belt.
