What it
usually means.
Marks that appear after the dryer, and not after the washer, come from something the clothes touch or something that melts in the heat. Dark gray or black lines along one edge usually mean the drum's front glides or felt seal have worn through and metal is rubbing. Brown or oily spots often come from dryer-sheet or fabric softener residue, or from ink, crayon, lip balm or gum left in a pocket that melted onto the drum. Snags and small holes point at a rough spot on the drum or a baffle that has come loose. Finding which one is mostly a matter of looking closely at the drum.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Are the marks black lines along the edges of clothes, or spots scattered anywhere?
Do they look greasy, waxy or like ink?
Is there any residue, color or melted material on the drum or the baffles?
Are the clothes also torn or snagged?
Do you hear a scrape at the front of the drum while it turns?
Check these
before you book.
Dryer leaving marks on clothes: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Wipe the inside of the drum with a white cloth to find melted residue, ink or rust.
Look at the front edge of the drum and the felt seal for wear or torn felt.
Run a hand carefully along each baffle to find loose fasteners or rough spots.
Also worth checking
- Check the pockets of the next few loads for pens, crayons and lip balm.
- Keep one marked item to show the technician; the pattern of the mark matters.
How soon does it need a visit?
Not urgent. The dryer is safe to use once the drum is clean, but stop drying good clothes in it if marks keep appearing after cleaning.

5 things dryer leaving marks on clothes turns out to be, from melted pocket item on the drum to rust or oil from a worn part.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Melted pocket item on the drum
Crayon, ink, lip balm or gum left in a pocket melts onto the drum and transfers to every later load. Cleaning the drum is the fix.
-
02 no repair
Dryer-sheet or softener residue
Sheets used on a small or overloaded dryer can leave greasy spots. Using fewer, and cleaning the drum and sensor bars, stops it.
-
03 low to moderate
Worn drum glides or felt seal
When the front support glides or felt seal wear away, clothes get pinched against metal at the drum edge and come out with dark lines.
-
04 low
Loose baffle or rough drum
A baffle that has pulled loose, or a chip in the drum's coating, catches fabric and leaves snags or rust spots.
-
05 moderate
Rust or oil from a worn part
Rust on a chipped drum, or oil from a failing bearing reaching the drum, leaves brown stains that do not wash out.
