What the dryer door switch and latch repair
involves.

A dryer will not run with its door open, and the door switch is how it knows. When the switch or its actuator wears, the dryer acts dead with the door closed, or stops when the load shifts against the door. The dryer door switch often also runs the drum light. Separate from the switch, the door is held by a catch or magnet and a hinge, and a worn catch or a sagging hinge lets it drift open during the cycle.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Humid Tampa Bay air can corrode the contacts in an older dryer's door switch, and a machine that will not start with the door shut is often a switch that no longer registers it.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In busy Orlando households and rental homes, dryer doors get slammed and leaned on, and a broken strike, a bent hinge or a worn door switch is a quick repair that stops the machine refusing to start.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Salt and humidity work on the hinge and catch of a dryer kept in a laundry closet close to the Miami shoreline, and a door that drifts open and stops the cycle is the usual sign.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In a New York laundry closet the dryer door may swing against a wall or the machine beside it, and reversing the door or replacing a cracked hinge is often part of making the dryer usable in that space.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Large Houston family loads mean the dryer door opens and closes many times a day, and the switch and catch wear on that schedule; a dryer that stops whenever someone bumps the door usually needs a new catch.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Older Chicagoland dryers with mechanical door switches tend to fail gradually, starting only when the door is pressed firmly shut, and replacing the switch is one of the shortest repairs in the trade.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

In a Los Angeles garage laundry the dryer door gets knocked by cars, bikes and storage bins, and a sagging door or broken hinge that no longer presses the switch is a common result.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Coastal air in San Diego can stiffen hinges and pit switch contacts on a dryer in an open garage, and a loose latch is worth fixing before it starts interrupting cycles.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

In small Bay Area laundry closets a stacked dryer's door often sits at eye level and takes hard use, and a worn catch or switch is one of the simpler repairs on a machine that is otherwise awkward to reach.

Questions about
the dryer door switch and latch repair.

My dryer does nothing when I press start. Could it be the door?
Yes. A failed door switch makes the dryer think the door is open, so it ignores the start button. If the drum light also stays off or stays on whatever the door does, the switch is a strong suspect.
Why does my dryer door keep popping open?
A worn catch, a bent strike or a hinge that has sagged lets the door drift when the load tumbles against it. Very large loads push on the door too. All of these are small parts.
Can the door switch cause the dryer to stop mid-cycle?
It can. A switch that is failing loses contact when the door flexes, and the dryer stops as if someone opened it. The start button then gets it going again, until the next time.
Can a dryer door be reversed?
Many side-hinged dryer doors can be moved to the other side with the parts supplied, which helps in a tight laundry room. A door that was reversed without all the pieces is a common cause of a poor latch.
