What the dryer control board and moisture sensor repair
involves.

A dryer decides when clothes are done in one of two ways: a mechanical timer with a thermostat, or a dryer control board reading the moisture sensor bars inside the drum and a thermistor in the airflow. The sensor bars are two metal strips the wet clothes touch, and a film of softener residue on them makes the dryer think a wet load is dry. Many control complaints are that film, a loose harness or a door switch, so the board is tested against its inputs before anyone replaces it.

How the visit goes

Controls and sensors,
step by step.

Replace the failed board, timer, keypad or sensor and run a sensor dry cycle on a real load.

01

Read any stored code or run the service test where the model has one, and treat it as a lead to confirm.

02

Clean and test the moisture sensor bars and check the thermistor reading against the actual air temperature.

03

Check the harness, the power supply to the board and the door switch input before condemning the board or timer.

04

Replace the failed board, timer, keypad or sensor and run a sensor dry cycle on a real load.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Summer storms and outages are part of life around Tampa Bay, and a dryer with a blank panel afterward is checked at the breaker and the outlet before anyone suspects the electronics.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's newer dryers use moisture sensor bars to end the cycle, and fabric softener residue on those bars is a common reason a load stops early and comes out damp.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Electronic dryer controls in humid Miami closets can throw intermittent errors that come from damp or corroded connectors, so the wiring harness plugs are cleaned and reseated first, and a new board comes last.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Compact and ventless dryers common in New York apartments lean heavily on sensors, and a cycle that seems to run forever is often a moisture sensor or thermistor reporting the wrong reading rather than a heating problem.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

After a Houston storm, a dryer that powers up but shows an error may have a loose thermistor connection or a board that took a surge, and the error is read and the sensor circuit tested before any board is ordered.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In older Chicagoland homes a dryer may share a circuit or plug into an aging receptacle, and a control panel that resets or shows errors is checked for supply problems before the board is blamed.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Newer Los Angeles dryers with touch panels and connected features can display errors that point to a sensor rather than the control itself, and reading the code first avoids replacing a board that was never the problem.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

A San Diego dryer control that stops responding is often in a garage exposed to coastal damp, and the panel connections and thermistor plug are checked for corrosion before any electronics are replaced.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Heat-pump and newer electric dryers in the Bay Area rely on more sensors than older machines, and a control error is often traced to a thermistor or a clogged filter the software has noticed.

Questions about
the dryer control board and moisture sensor repair.

Why does the sensor dry cycle stop while clothes are still damp?
Most often the moisture sensor bars are coated with softener or dryer sheet residue. Wiping them with rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth often cures it. If it does not, the sensor wiring or the board is tested.
My dryer display is completely blank. Is the board gone?
Check the breaker and the outlet first. On a gas dryer, the ordinary 120-volt outlet may be on a GFCI that tripped. After that, a blown thermal fuse or a door switch can leave some panels dark before the board is at issue.
Can a power surge damage the dryer control?
Yes. Electronic boards are sensitive to surges, and a dryer that went dark after a storm often has a damaged board or a blown fuse on it. The rest of the dryer is usually fine.
Is a mechanical timer easier to repair than a board?
A timer is simpler to test, and the part is often less costly. Both are replaced rather than rebuilt, and both are tested before they are replaced.
